I Want Real Relationships Not Just Social Media Attention
- 2 Comment
Some people use social media the same way they network in person.
They rush in shake a lot of hands, splash business cards all over the place, and are so busy selling everyone, no one ever gets a chance to get to know one another. people like this are users and not builders.
Be a Relationship Builder
Using social media to network is all about building relationships, helping others first, and really getting to know people well.
Building quality relationships takes time and the rewards are personal on the short-term. Helping someone else is one of my greatest pleasures. Business rewards are longer term and will grow along with the relationship.
How do you feel about this? What has been your experience?

For me, it has always been about the relationships. If I’m unhappy working with a client, I know I’m not really giving my best as my energies are diluted with the conflicts within in.
My favorite clients are those who keep coming back for more over the long term, built on trust and familiarity with our working styles. Just think of how long it takes to train a new employee. When you trust your business to an expert, you want them to hit the ground and keep running - not stopping and starting and retraining. Every time you start over with someone new, you lose valuable time and information.
Sure, starting fresh can bring a new perspective, but maintaining the relationship creates a strong bond and history.
The issue is establishing those relationships from the get-go with a new client. How do you establish that “old feeling” in a new business relationship.

@Lorelle, I really like how you identified the cost of starting over in business relationships. Great point.
Social media like twitter, seesmic, friend feed and others - get labeled as “social” media when in fact they are just the media that is facilitating the discussion. We the people, make it social.
Always have, always will.
It is all about making a connection, caring, and doing what you say you will do - then people will come back for more - of the same experience.
